WHIN is currently seeking a high-performing Brass Teaching Artist who is ready to help grow a unique school community where compassion, kindness, and curiosity drive every day.  The Brass Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality music instruction to students, specializing in brass instruments such as trumpet, trombone, tuba, and French horn. The teacher will develop students’ musical skills, foster their appreciation for music, and prepare them for performances and community events.

 

Specifically, a Brass Teaching Artist at WHIN is responsible for:

  • Foster a love of making music in an ensemble setting.
  • Model high-quality musicianship & citizenship within the WHIN community.
  • Lead daily small group sectionals. 
  • Plan, prepare, & deliver engaging & effective lessons to students of varying ages & skill levels.
  • Develop individualized learning plans to address the needs & goals of each student.
  • Teach techniques, scales, pieces, & music theory related to brass instruments.
  • Prepare students for school concerts, recitals, & other performances.
  • Assess students’ progress & provide constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with other music teachers & staff to coordinate performances & events.
  • Maintain an organized & safe learning environment.
  • Encourage students’ enthusiasm & passion for music.
  • Stay updated on the latest teaching methods & musical repertoire for brass instruments.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities.
  • Employ a variety of instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of all learners.
  • Hold all students to high musical, academic, & behavioral standards.
  • Develop consistent & safe routines & procedures for rehearsals.
  • Administer regular music assessments & use data to drive instruction.
  • Maintain inventory of instruments & perform small instrument repairs as necessary.
  • Keep an organized & tidy classroom conducive to music-making.
  • Assist with all aspects of bi-monthly concerts & weekly “informances.”
  • Fully participate in weekly music departmental meetings, full-faculty professional development, & committee work.
  • Collaborate with other music & classroom teachers to foster a music-infused curriculum across the school.
  • Attend all WHIN concerts, community performances, & departmental programming.
  • Participate in school-wide tasks & responsibilities as needed.
  • Develop & maintain strong & professional relationships with WHIN families.
 

Qualifications for the Brass Teaching Artist positions are:

  • Minimum education level: BA/BM in music education or music performance (MA/MM preferred) 
  • Experience teaching elementary music in an urban school setting 
  • Advanced proficiency on cello, understanding of childhood music pedagogy, and a pleasant singing voice
  • The ability to accompany children on piano, guitar, and/or percussion
  • Demonstrated success raising achievement levels of all students 
  • An unwavering belief that all students can achieve at a high level
  • The ability to commit regular hours to WHIN for a full academic year
  • A sense of humor 
 

Advanced proficiency or experience in one or more of the following areas is strongly preferred:

  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Experience in El Sistema-based music instruction 
  • Active gigging musician
  • Dalcroze, Suzuki, Orff Schulwerk, Kodály, Gordon’s Music Learning Theory, and/or Praxialism 
  • Responsive Classroom, Love and Logic Student Management, and/or Restorative Justice

Compensation/Benefits: WHIN Music Community Charter School offers a competitive hourly wage, fun and professional working environment, as well as ongoing PD opportunities.  Hourly Wage: $35.00-$45.00
