Controller – Legal Industry

Location: Metro Detroit, Michigan
Job Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Industry: Legal / Professional Services
Reports To: Executive Board

About the Organization

A respected, high-performing law firm based in Metro Detroit is seeking a skilled Controller to oversee and manage its financial operations. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic legal team committed to operational excellence and financial integrity.

Position Summary

The Controller will be responsible for managing all financial activities, including budgeting, reporting, forecasting, compliance, and internal controls. This role requires strong leadership, technical accounting knowledge, and a deep understanding of legal industry billing and trust accounting. The Controller will work closely with firm leadership to support strategic decision-making and ensure financial health.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
  • CPA, CMA, or MBA (preferred)
  • 5+ years of financial/accounting experience, with 3+ years in a leadership role
  • Experience in a law firm or professional services environment strongly preferred
  • Expertise in GAAP, law firm billing practices, and client trust account management
  • Proficiency in accounting software
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, modeling)

Core Responsibilities

  • Oversee accurate and timely financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Manage cash flow, accounts receivable/payable, and working capital
  • Ensure tax compliance and coordinate audits
  • Supervise billing, collections, and trust account compliance
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members
  • Present financial data and strategic insights to executive leadership
